About
The Rockaway Company is a carpenter and general contractor based in Fort Worth, Texas. Barry Thombs runs the family-owned business that has operated since 1993. They provide kitchen remodeling, bathroom remodeling, interior and exterior remodeling, and accessibility work for homes. They also take on commercial interior and exterior projects along with planning and design services.
Customers talk about full kitchen remodels that changed layouts and added new cabinets and drawers. Some jobs involved making bathrooms accessible with roll-in showers, grab bars, and wider doorways in older homes. Others included pantry updates, master bathroom remodels, beam installations, and full home updates for senior access. Jose and Chris handled drawer work, Barry Thombs provided design ideas, John managed project schedules, Larry helped with bids and selections, and Geoff installed beams. Reviewers note that crews handled demolition and rebuilds while keeping pets and daily life in mind during the process.
Crews arrive when scheduled and keep the work area clean at the end of each day. Projects stay close to the planned timeline even after some changes. Pricing is described as fair for the quality delivered. The service area includes Fort Worth and nearby places in North Texas. A project manager stays on site when needed, and the team responds quickly to calls or texts about issues. Reviewers mention that the same craftsmen have worked with the company for years and handle discussions about any situations that come up.
Reviews give them a 3.8 rating on Google though with no reviews counted there. People often note the solid craftsmanship, daily cleanup, and responsive project managers. A few mention paint issues on cabinets or higher costs than expected.

What Customers Say
“The Rockaway crew were true professionals and did a fabulous job on remodeling our kitchen. The work was completed efficiently and the area was cleaned up at the end of each work day. Things were not always perfect, but it only took one phone call or text and they corrected all issues immediately. They are not the cheapest contractor, but the quality of work far outweighs the cost. Special kudos to Jose and Chris for the great drawers in the kitchen and Barry Thombs for great design ideas. I highly recommend. this honest company.”
“This was our first major remodel in our 1978 built home. We wanted to go with a company that would see this project through from start to finish within a timeline that they set and met. We wanted to avoid a "piecemeal" project which might take months or years to do and cause much disruption in our pet-filled household. We specifically asked for a handicap/senior accessible design with a roll-in shower with shower bench, low vanity tops, widened doorways, grab bars, great lighting, a walk-in closet. We reconfigured the area which required much demolition and rebuild. We got exactly what we wanted. From initial design (and re-design), Barry, the owner walked us through the entire process and made sure we knew what was about to happen. His project manager John and all the sub-contractors came when they said they would, addressed any issues as they came up, were cognizant of our needs and were professional and skilled in all that they did. They sent a cleaning crew at the end to clear away all the dust and dirt that naturally occurs with a project like this. Blake and Lori at the office were great also! When I read negative reviews about this company, I have doubts that these reviewers”
“We just completed a kitchen remodel. Everything is new and we even changed the configuration of the kitchen a bit. I absolutely love everything about my new kitchen! The work is great and everything moved along as scheduled. People came when I was told they would be there. I can't say enough good things!”
“We had some issues in our pantry and hired them to do updates and a small remodel. The pricing was fair, the contractors were world class. The job was done in less than two weeks and we loved it.”
“I loved working with Barry and his crew from RockAway Company. We have a beautiful new kitchen and bathroom remodeled that we are very much enjoying still. I felt I gained a new friend with Barry as we worked together to choose materials for the remodel. Their crew has been with them for years and you'll get excellent service. The only negative I have is to beware of using marble in your bathroom - I wished I had used granite instead! Still, I highly recommend using RockAway as they are trustworthy and reliable and do excellent work.”
“The RockAway Company has done 2 major jobs for me in addition to painting my entire house. The first job was a remodel of the kitchen. Their creative design was amazing and exceeded our expectations. The second job was a remodel of the master bathroom. Again, their creative design was amazing and exceeded our expectations. Their craftsmen have worked for them for years and are very easy to discuss any situation with that may arise. Their project manager is the best and is present when you need him. At the end of the work day, the area they are working in is left very clean. RockAway may not be the cheapest contractor, but I will assure you, the quality of work is the best. I will utilize them again should I have another job. It is without any reservations or hesitations that I completely recommend the RockAway Company.”
“The Rockaway Company delivered on their promise to be on time with our project. The job was bid and planned by Larry. He was knowledgeable and helpful with ideas. He did a great job in helping us pick cabinets, floor and tile. When the job started John timed every aspect of the project perfectly. Even with several change orders the project came in very close to the estimate. We will use them again and highly recommend The Rockaway Company.”
“The cleanup crew is here now. I love everything about complete kitchen remodel. Barry is excellent about suggestions that will work for my taste & life style. John, project manager, made sure all crews were scheduled and working as planned. When I get the recycled appliances in, I will let you know how space works. Only thing left to do is drawers & cabinet handles. 17 working days from start to finish just like Predicted. Would have been finished in 14 days, if backsplash tile hadn’t been back ordered & I wasn’t indecisive on handles. So excited.”
“Exceptional workmanship and professionalism. We’ve used RockAway for three separate projects and will definitely hire them again for our future projects.”
“RockAway did a fantastic job on two bathrooms, and we had them back for other work. Important to us was that they were on time with their work schedule and there were no delays. Craftsmen know each other and do a lot of work for RockAway, and do it well. I can't seem to post pictures here, but it all looks and works great.”
“RockAway did a phenomenal job on my remodel for my kitchen and two bathrooms. I am more than pleased with the quality of work and everyone was easy to work with and very attentive. I will be using them again next year for other home projects I have!”
“We had Rockaway do a complete remodel of our hall bathroom. The overall work was acceptable until the paint on our cabinets started peeling off. I contacted them and they agreed that the cabinets weren't prepped correctly prior to painting. As a result the paint didn't adhere to the cabinet surfaces. Since this work was still under warranty I requested they honor the warranty and redo the work on the cabinets. Immediately the owner of the company started telling me that he told me it wasn't going to work and that the only solution was to replace the doors and drawers and that would be up to me to do. He never informed me that he felt the painting of the cabinets would be an issue but rather willingly included the refinishing of my cabinets and specifically mentions the sanding, prepping, and painting in the scope of work for the job. I asked him why would he knowingly agree to do work for a customer that he felt would be of poor quality. No explanation. He offered to touch up the areas with some paint...that was his solution. I said that wasn't a solution to the problem, only a band-aid. His suggested solution only underscores his willingness to disregard quality work to make a”
“We chose RockAway to remodel our small home when it was necessary to move my elderly dad in with us. Mr. Thombs is extremely skilled at taking our small space and making it handicap accessible and a much more energy efficient, usable space for all of us. The project included remodeling both bathrooms, adding a pantry and two large storage cabinets, replacing carpet with vinyl flooring and new carpet, attic insulation and Hardie siding to the outside and trim work. The workers were excellent, I never worried about them being in our home even if we were not able to be present. The lock box on the door is very convenient for them and the homeowner. A few years later, they installed vinyl double hung windows to our home. We are thrilled with them - the windows have made the house much more quiet from outside noise, are easy to clean and have helped with heating and cooling. We recommend The RockAway Company to anyone we know who needs any type remodeling and are planning to use them again for our kitchen remodel.”
“Called to get beams installed on our 16' ceiling.. Sent out Geoff & he did a awesome job. We called 6 other people that left us hanging. Should have called Rockaway first! Will use them again..”
“Rockaway remodeled my bathroom and kitchen. Great job. On schedule. Clean and respectful.”
“Appreciated Rockaway Disaster Services so much. Everyone was so nice and professional, I've been dealing with an illness and have trouble walking... Having this casualty happen to my house could have been overwhelming, but these folks did all they could to make it as easy on me as possible!”
“Called to talk to someone Blake answered phone hung up on me 4 times. Very rude and would not recommend at all.”
“Other bids were in the $10k range. Rockaway was $47k ... FOR LESS WORK!!!!!”
“Project manager visited but work was never performed. Ended up doing the work myself.”
“Very professional. Remodeled master bathroom, love it!”
