About
Starnes Commercial Refrigeration Co works out of Dallas, TX with a focus on HVAC and commercial refrigeration. The operation traces back to 1975 and covers commercial facilities along with residential properties in the region. Crews manage air handlers, boilers, chillers, and walk-in refrigeration units plus the controls that connect them. They also run planned maintenance programs and round-the-clock emergency response for both business and home customers who need reliable heating and cooling in Texas conditions.
Technicians handle service calls that involve checking valves and adding refrigerant when systems lose charge, along with heat pump repairs such as the mid-July job where an outside fan stopped working on a residential unit. They perform equipment changeouts, system retrofits, and full refrigeration installations from design through commissioning. Customers have noted visits for heat pump failures during peak summer heat and quick responses on commercial refrigeration breakdowns, with the same crews covering both planned maintenance schedules and urgent after-hours fixes when boilers or chillers go down.
Homeowners and facility managers in Dallas consistently note fast arrival times on emergency HVAC calls, solid workmanship that gets units running again without repeat issues, and clear communication on what the job will cost upfront. The crews earn strong marks for keeping prices reasonable on repair work and following through on maintenance plans that prevent bigger failures. DIRT Score 4.52 from 99 reviews on Finds.

What Customers Say
“Called and was told it would be a $180 service call fee. Guy comes out and said a valve is bad and it would 2150 to fix so I declined, following week I get a bill for $360 and when I called the lady said he added refrigerant. That was the first I heard of that. Just seems like a very shady company, that when they believe they have a customer they can gouge they go for it, and when you decline they jack up the service call bill. The valve that needed to be replaced after calling 10 other hvac companies I got quotes between 650 to 975. So take your chance and if you have money to throw away this is the company for you. Having 10 other hvac companies giving quotes of no where near what this company wanted should also tell you something is not right.”
“They didnt repair anything nor did I call them but a service tech almost killed me crossing a turn lane with me in it because he decided he didnt want to be in that lane anymore. I called and let them know and they didnt seem bothered by it.”
“DON'T CALL US, WE'LL CALL YOU. Our heatpump quit in mid July. The tech came, ordered the part and then we waited. After a couple of weeks I called to check on the part and they only let you talk to the receptionist, so each time I called she said she would check with the parts person and when it came in, she would call me. After a few weeks with the same answer, I ask to talk directly with the parts person. I tried that about three days in a row and then called the manufacturer myself. When I made it thru their system and spoke with customer service, I found out they had not ordered a part since May. When I called back the receptionist and informed her of my investigation, they ordered the part for next business day delivery, which was Monday, and installed it Tuesday (which is why I rated them as high as I did) So something that should have taken a week, or two at most, took about 5 weeks to resolve. Then, after telling me the part would be about $500, it was $700.”
“I had them to repair a heat pump 7-15/25 at my brother's house. The technician was there less than 20 min. He got it to running but this evening 7-16-25 my brother informed me that the fan on the outside unit had stopped again. In the meantime I received the invoice this morning and I paid it this morning $230. When I contacted their office I was informed that the technician said that he would not return because the "house was too dirty". When I advised my brother he informed me that he had never entered the house or the basement and just worked from the outside. Sounds a little fishy.”
“Disappointed. After they “repaired” my outside unit it went down again two days later at the hottest point of the summer. When another company came out to fix it, they advised the capacitor they used was faulty and very cheap. Several weeks later I received an invoice for almost $500. If I have to pay this full invoice I may seek farther action. If not, I’ll remove the review.”
