Excelsior A C & Refrigeration
HVAC Contractor · McAllen, TX
About
Excelsior A C & Refrigeration runs HVAC work out of McAllen, Texas. They handle air conditioning and heating systems for local homes, including repairs and full replacements when needed. Customers mention the company steps in for heat pump jobs that include a gas furnace backup and for troubleshooting older gas furnaces. The crew checks equipment on site rather than pushing new installs every time, and they coordinate with other trades when a job involves crawl space work or similar add ons. Homeowners in the area reach them for routine checks that keep systems running through the heat and occasional cold snaps common to South Texas.
Technicians like Kenny show up with an apprentice to address specific concerns on time and walk through fixes without extra steps. One job involved a gas furnace where the first visit flagged motorized dampers as the issue, but a follow up check narrowed it to the heat exchanger instead. Another homeowner replaced a heat pump and later needed help understanding the new thermostat, so Eric came out to explain the settings. Office staff such as Joanna handle calls and keep things moving when questions come up about maintenance or scheduling. These details show they cover full installs, targeted repairs on dampers and exchangers, and follow up visits for controls.
Customers keep coming back because the crew stays honest about what a system actually needs and avoids extra charges. Reviews point to solid quality on the work itself, clear updates during the job, and fair pricing that matches the scope described upfront. Speed shows in on time arrivals and quick second visits when the first diagnosis needs adjustment. Communication stands out when staff answer questions about new equipment without rushing the homeowner. DIRT Score 4.94 from 64 reviews on Finds.

What Customers Say
“I’ve had nothing but good experiences with this company, therefore when it came time to update my HVAC system I went with them. I got a heat up with gas furnace as backup. They don’t try to up sell, they are honest and very easy to work with. They coordinated with the company that encapsulated my crawl space, which was great because I didn’t have to be the middle person between them. They also install a new vent for my dryer and they even leveled my LG Tower for me.”
“Man came out to look at my gas furnace. He said all three motorized dampers need to be replaced. He said if one was bad his boss recommended all of them be replaced. He came out again later and determined that was the problem. The next day another man came out and determined that the heat exchanger needed to be replaced. He said he couldn't leave the furnace running because there was a chance of carbon monoxide. The part took 12 days to get here. They did not expedite the part. I was told by the technician that it only weighed 15 or 20 lb. This part was covered under warranty. This was in the middle of winter when we had freezing days constantly. I had to buy several heaters to keep my house warm. They charged me over $2,500 labor for 5 hours work and the time that it took to determine what the problem was. I'm running the AC now and it's not running right because of something they've done wrong. So do yourself a favor and don't deal with these rip-off artists. You shut off my heat claiming carbon monoxide poisoning. I had no choice but to approve the quote thinking you would expedite this and get it done instead it took 12 days. I understand you need to make a profit. You could have adjusted the price when you found out what the cost was. But you took advantage. Your man claimed the motorized dampers were fine when he finished. I won't ask you to come out and take a look again for fear that you will find something else to charge me for. Called in another contractor. You left wires on the gas furnace unhooked and taped together that he said is a no no. He plugged them back in. The wires on one motorized damper were not connected. He fixed this. He will install a short bypass duct to keep the unit from being over pressurized. This will give us full control of each thermostat up and downstairs. Obviously you sent people to my house that did not know what they were doing.”
“I had a great experience today with Kenny at Excelsior Air. He and is apprentice showed up on time and handled my concerns. I am glad to have a trusted resource for my HVAC needs.”
“We are so happy that Excelsior Air was highly recommended to us when our heat pump needed to be replaced. Excellent office staff, Joanna is alwaus friendly and professional when we call. When we did not understand our new, state of the art thermostat, Eric stopped by and answered all our questions and set us up for success. He also stopped by to check our system and filter after running for a few months and to see if we had questions. When our new heat pump showed signs of a problem, Joanna sent Mason over and he diagnosed the problem and made the repair at the same time. We are back up and running smoothly. Thanks so much.”
“I’ve been using Excelsior Air for HVAC services for years now. I always recommend them to others, every chance I get! Every tech that’s been out to my house over the years has been top notch (Kenny, Eric) and I also had them install a new system for me recently as well. Joanna is an amazing service coordinator as well, she’s always friendly and extremely helpful. Jesse (owner) runs an excellent company, and he isn’t afraid to dive into projects alongside his employees as well - that speaks volumes to his character. They’re the only company I trust for HVAC, period. Highly recommended!”
