The problem
You have invoices sitting at different stages — some sent and waiting, some partially paid, one that needs to be voided because you rebilled it. Without clear status on each one, your AR number is a guess and follow-ups happen by memory.
Why we built it
Invoice status isn't just a label. It drives what actions are available, what shows up in your AR dashboard, and what gets flagged when it's overdue. DIRT moves invoices through their lifecycle automatically so the right ones surface at the right time.
How it works
- 1
Create a draft invoice. It stays in Draft until you send it.
- 2
Send it — status moves to Sent. Overdue flag fires automatically after the due date.
- 3
Mark partial payments as received — status moves to Partial. Final payment closes it to Paid.
What changes for your business
Before
Invoice is either "open" or "paid." Partials and overdue ones get tracked manually.
After
Every stage has a status. Overdue flags automatically. AR is always accurate.
Common questions
What are the different statuses an invoice goes through?
In DIRT: Draft (created, not sent), Sent (delivered to client), Partial (some payment received), Paid (fully settled), and Voided (canceled). Each status drives the right actions — you can send a reminder to Sent invoices, log payments to Partial ones, and void only invoices with no payment.
How does DIRT track overdue invoices automatically?
When an invoice's due date passes without payment, DIRT flags it as overdue. It appears in your AR dashboard with the days past due. You do not have to manually check dates — the flag surfaces in the app and in proactive insight cards.
What does a voided invoice mean?
A voided invoice is canceled — it no longer counts against your AR and the client is no longer expected to pay. Use void when you issued an invoice in error or reissued a corrected version. DIRT keeps the voided record in the client's history so there is an audit trail.
Can I reopen a paid invoice to add more charges?
No. A paid invoice is closed. If you have additional charges to bill, create a new invoice for the remaining work. This is cleaner for the client and cleaner for your records — each invoice represents a discrete set of work.
How do I know if a client has received my invoice?
DIRT sends the invoice by email, SMS, or shareable link. SMS links and email have read receipts in some cases, but the most reliable signal is payment or a direct response from the client. If you hear nothing, follow up — DIRT lets you send a reminder from the Sent invoice in two taps.
What happens if I create duplicate invoices by accident?
Void one of them. In DIRT, voiding removes the invoice from your AR dashboard and marks it as inactive in the client's record. The correct invoice stays open and continues through its lifecycle normally.
