The problem
Your accountant asks about mileage every year. You give them a guess. You have a separate mileage tracker app that you stopped using in March. The real number is somewhere between your bank statements and your memory.
Why we built it
Travel stats are part of your business stats, not a separate tracking exercise. Miles logged through DIRT flow directly into your stats — weekly totals, monthly totals, and cost breakdowns — so you have one place to look.
How it works
- 1
Log trips through DIRT (manual or voice).
- 2
Open Stats and tap "Travel." See total miles and total cost for any time period.
- 3
Export for tax purposes or use it to benchmark your travel cost as a percentage of job revenue.
What changes for your business
Before
Separate mileage app. Only accurate if you remembered to use it.
After
Travel stats in DIRT alongside job stats. One place. Always current.
Common questions
Where do I see my total business mileage in DIRT?
Open the Stats tab and tap "Travel." Total miles for any time period appear there, along with total travel cost at your set rate. You can view by week, month, or year-to-date. Every trip you logged in DIRT feeds these numbers.
How do I get my mileage total for tax purposes?
Your travel stats in DIRT show total miles for any date range you select. For an annual mileage deduction, pull the YTD total. You also need the date, destination, and purpose for each trip — all of which DIRT logs when you record a trip. That is the IRS-required contemporaneous log.
Do I need a separate mileage app if I use DIRT?
No. Trip logging and travel stats are built into DIRT alongside job tracking. Every mile you log attaches to a job and shows up in both the job's cost breakdown and your overall travel stats. No second app, no separate export to merge at tax time.
Can I see my travel cost as a percentage of revenue in DIRT?
The travel stats view shows total travel cost for a period. You can compare that against your total revenue from stats for the same period to calculate the percentage manually. For most contractors, travel runs 3–8% of revenue — higher if jobs are spread out geographically.
What if I drive a lot but only some of it is for jobs?
In DIRT, you only log trips that are job-related. Personal mileage does not go in the app. The travel stats reflect only what you logged — so if you log correctly, your stats show business mileage only, which is the deductible portion.
How do I export my mileage data from DIRT?
The travel stats screen shows totals and individual trip data. Screenshot or export from the stats view for your records. Your accountant will want the trip-level log as well as the total — DIRT holds both.
